Lowell Observatory

Perched on Mars Hill just above downtown, Lowell Observatory is one of the oldest observatories in the country and a genuine piece of scientific history — it is where Pluto was discovered in 1930. Founded by Percival Lowell in 1894, it remains a working research institution and a place where the public can still put an eye to a telescope under famously dark skies.

Evening programs are the highlight: guided stargazing, a look through the historic Clark Telescope, and the newer Astronomy Discovery Center, which makes the science hands-on and engaging for all ages. It is the rare attraction that is as rewarding for curious kids as it is for adults.

From a Flagstaff rental it is just up Mars Hill from downtown, which makes an after-dark visit easy. Evenings at 7,000 feet get cold even in summer, so bring layers, and check the program schedule ahead — clear-sky viewing nights are the ones you will remember.
