Flagstaff is a pine-forested mountain town at 7,000 feet in Northern Arizona, and it works best as a four-season basecamp: the Grand Canyon's South Rim to the north, Route 66 history downtown, ski runs at Snowbowl in winter, and summers far cooler than the desert below.
That mix suits road-trippers, families, skiers, and anyone driving up from Phoenix or Tucson to get out of the July heat. Downtown is walkable and full of brick storefronts, breweries, and old neon signs, and the night skies here are protected, so stargazing is genuinely part of the trip rather than a bonus.
Winter is the honest tradeoff. Snow is common from late fall into spring, storms can slow or close I-17 and I-40, and the road up to Snowbowl often calls for snow tires or chains. If you are visiting between December and March, plan for winter driving, check conditions before you set out, and give yourself a day to adjust to the altitude.
CultureUp on Mars Hill, this is where Pluto was discovered in 1930, and you can still put your eye to a real telescope here under Flagstaff's dark skies. The newer Astronomy Discovery Center makes it a fun evening for all ages.
OutdoorsUp on the San Francisco Peaks, Snowbowl is the winter playground for skiing and boarding, and in the warm months the Arizona Gondola carries you above the pines for views toward the Grand Canyon.

Two or three days covers the essentials: a day downtown and at Lowell Observatory, a day in the pines or out at Walnut Canyon, and a day for the Grand Canyon. Stretch it to four or five if you are skiing in winter or want unhurried time on the trails.
For most trips, yes. Downtown is walkable and the town has local bus service, but Lowell Observatory, Snowbowl, Walnut Canyon, and the Grand Canyon all call for a vehicle. In winter, check road conditions before you drive, allow extra time after a storm, and expect snow tires or chains to be required on the road up to Snowbowl.
