Scottsdale is a Sonoran Desert resort city on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metro area, known for championship golf, spa resorts, a walkable Old Town full of galleries and patios, and desert trails that start at the city's edge. It works as well for a long golf weekend as it does for a whole winter.
That range is the point. Golf groups and bachelorette parties fill Old Town, snowbirds settle in from late fall through spring, and families split their days between the pool and the McDowell foothills. Winter and spring are the marquee seasons, anchored by spring training and a run of signature events.
The honest tradeoff is that the same winter calendar is when Scottsdale is busiest and most expensive. If your dates are flexible, late spring and early fall bring comfortable mornings, easier tee times, and far less competition for a good home. If you want January or February, book well ahead: the big event weekends fill first.

OutdoorsThe Valley's signature summit hike, straddling the Scottsdale–Phoenix line, with the steep Echo Canyon and Cholla trails rewarding you with a panoramic view over the whole basin. It's a genuine workout, so go early, and turning back partway is no failure on a hot day.

SportsHeld each winter at TPC Scottsdale, "The People's Open" is famous for its raucous stadium-style 16th hole and record-setting crowds. It plays as much like a full-blown social event for the whole Valley as a golf tournament.
ArtsEvery fall the Scottsdale Waterfront lights up with large-scale interactive art installations, live performances, and nightly programming along the Arizona Canal. Free to wander and best enjoyed after dark when the installations glow.

Four or five days is a comfortable length for a first trip: enough for a round of golf or a desert hike, a day in Old Town, and a slow afternoon by the pool without feeling rushed. A long weekend works if you pick one or two things and skip the rest. Winter visitors and snowbirds often settle in for a month or longer.
For most trips, yes. Old Town itself is genuinely walkable and rideshare is easy to find there, but the Valley is spread out, and golf courses, trailheads, and North Scottsdale are not within walking distance of most homes. Phoenix Sky Harbor is the airport that serves the area, and most guests pick up a rental car on arrival.
Hot, and worth planning around honestly. From June into September daytime highs regularly climb past 100 degrees, and midday hiking shifts from uncomfortable to genuinely unsafe. Summer is the quietest season here, which is its appeal: shade, a working pool, and an early start to the day matter more than anything else on the listing.
