Pinetop-Lakeside is where Arizona goes to cool off. High in the White Mountains, the twin towns sit under a thick ponderosa forest, with mountain lakes, trout streams, and crisp air standing in for desert heat. Most visitors come up from the Valley for a long weekend of hiking, fishing, and doing very little.
It suits families, anglers, and anyone after a low-key mountain reset. Summer means hiking and biking the White Mountain Trail System; fall turns the aspens gold along the Mogollon Rim; winter brings snow and skiing at Sunrise Park Resort; spring is the quietest stretch of the year.
One honest note: this is a seasonal town. Between the summer and ski crowds, some restaurants and shops trim their hours or close between seasons, and winter storms can slow the mountain roads. Check what is open before you drive up, and pack layers whatever the forecast says down in Phoenix.
