Just across the line in Papago Park, the Desert Botanical Garden is where you go in the Valley to meet the desert's plant life up close. Its 140 acres hold more than 50,000 plants along five easy, paved thematic trails — towering saguaros, sculptural agave, and a deep collection of cacti and succulents from deserts around the world.
Spring is spectacular, when the wildflower trail erupts in color, but the Garden rewards a visit in any season. Winter brings Las Noches de las Luminarias, when thousands of hand-lit candles glow along the paths, and summer's Flashlight Nights let you explore after dark when the desert comes alive. Rotating outdoor art installations regularly draw locals back throughout the year.
The paved, gentle trails make this one of the most accessible outings in the area — genuinely good for grandparents and strollers alike. It's an easy trip from most Scottsdale rentals; buy timed-entry tickets ahead on busy weekends and give yourself a couple of unhurried hours.
