McDowell Sonoran Preserve

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve protects more than 30,000 acres of Sonoran Desert along the northern and eastern edges of Scottsdale, a city-run preserve that wraps much of the city's northern edge. A well-built network of trails threads through saguaro stands, boulder fields, and the McDowell Mountains.

There's a route for every ability. The Gateway Trailhead offers gentle, well-signed loops with interpretive signs and big mountain views, while stronger hikers can push toward landmarks like Tom's Thumb, a granite spire on the range's north end. Wildlife, spring wildflowers, and long desert vistas are the constant rewards.

Go at sunrise from spring through fall — there's little shade and the heat builds fast. Carry far more water than you think you'll need, and check trailhead hours before you set out. Most trailheads are an easy drive from North Scottsdale rentals.
