Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West in the desert at the edge of Scottsdale

Taliesin West

Taliesin West was Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home, studio, and architectural laboratory, built beginning in 1937 in the McDowell foothills on the northeastern edge of Scottsdale. Wright and his apprentices constructed it largely by hand from local desert rock and sand, and he kept reworking the complex until his death in 1959. Today it serves as the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's the clearest place in the Valley to see Wright's idea of organic architecture in the flesh — buildings meant to grow out of their landscape rather than sit on top of it. The low, angular structures, the way the desert light moves through the rooms, and the constant conversation between indoor and outdoor space all reward an unhurried visit.

Taliesin West is experienced by guided tour only, so book ahead — tours fill up through the busy winter and spring season and time slots are limited. Mornings are cooler and the light is at its best. It sits in North Scottsdale, an easy half-day outing from most Scottsdale rentals.
