Historic Fourth Avenue

Historic Fourth Avenue is a walkable stretch of independent character in Tucson — a tree-lined string of vintage clothing stores, record shops, bookstores, taquerias, coffeehouses, and bars running between downtown and the University of Arizona. The modern streetcar links the two, so you can leave the car behind.

By day it's for browsing: local makers, thrift and antique finds, and a laid-back mix of students and longtime Tucsonans. After dark the block shifts into a nightlife corridor, with live music, patios, and an easy, unpretentious crowd. Twice a year the Fourth Avenue Street Fair fills the whole avenue with artists and food vendors.

From a downtown or university-area rental it's an easy walk or a streetcar ride, which makes it a great low-key evening when you don't feel like driving. Wear comfortable shoes and give yourself time to wander in and out of the shops.
