Saguaro National Park protects the towering, many-armed saguaro cactus — the giant that grows only in the Sonoran Desert and has become the very symbol of the American Southwest. The park is split into two districts on either side of Tucson: the Rincon Mountain District (Saguaro East) and the Tucson Mountain District (Saguaro West), each with its own visitor center, scenic loop drive, and trail network.

Walking among cacti that can top 40 feet and live well over a century is genuinely humbling, and the light does the rest — come at sunrise or sunset, when the low sun turns the desert gold and the saguaros throw long shadows. Saguaro West pairs beautifully with the nearby Desert Museum; Saguaro East offers a longer paved loop popular with cyclists.

The two districts sit on opposite sides of the city, so a car makes visiting easy. Bring plenty of water, wear a hat, and start early in the warmer months — there's little shade among the cacti. A national park pass or the per-vehicle fee covers entry.
